The flora of Stelvio National Park

The variety of plant species present in the park is particularly wide. Along a vertical line of 1000 m all the altitudinal vegetation belts are crossed, from the forest of conifers in the bottom of the valley up to the areas covered with snow, with species resistant to freezing which grow on the ground facing the glaciers.

The rich variety of flora depends also from the so-called phenomenon of calcium silicates: the calcareous soil of the rocks of the dolomites and the acid soils with a substrate of silicate produce a rich vegetal carpet in a very narrow space. The glacier globe-flowers, which hold the record of a plant capable to live in the highest altitudes, wait for visitors with their white-pink corolla just nearby the glaciers.
