The Park
The Stelvio National Park has been established in 1935 in order to "protect and improve flora, increase fauna and in order to preserve the special geological formations and the beauties of the landscape" of the Ortler-Cevedale mountain range, moreover, in order to "promote development of tourism" in some of the most beautiful valleys of the Alps. Thus the Stelvio National Park, which according to its extension is by itself the most extensive of the Alps, represents only the heart of an ever wider protected area which stretches over nearly 400,000 hectares.

The Trentino section
The Trentino section of the Stelvio National Park includes two lateral valleys of the Val di Sole: the Val di Rabbi and the Val di Peio. Typical feature common to both valleys is the presence of two modern spa centres. Val di Peio boasts mountain tops with exceed 3000 m and an important presence of glaciers. Main town and service centre of the valley is Cogolo (1173 m), whereas Peio paese (1584 m) is the "Terrace of Trentino". The Val di Rabbi, 12 Km long, is crossed by the Rabbies river. The head part, open and wide is made up by a huge circle of mountain tops reaching more than 3000 m of altitude. It is a quiet valley, where silence is interrupted only by the roar of the beautiful and numerous waterfalls. One for all is the waterfall of Saent, each year appreciated destination of numerous visitors. In this valley nature's presence is even more predominant with respect to human settlements. The presence of the park on this territories, by now since many years, makes it possible to meet easily along the trails roes, chamois, squirrels, marmots and with major attention, also small herds of deer.

The flora of Stelvio National Park
The variety of plant species present in the park is particularly wide. Along a vertical line of 1000 m all the altitudinal vegetation belts are crossed, from the forest of conifers in the bottom of the valley up to the areas covered with snow, with species resistant to freezing which grow on the ground facing the glaciers. The rich variety of flora depends also from the so-called phenomenon of calcium silicates: the calcareous soil of the rocks of the dolomites and the acid soils with a substrate of silicate produce a rich vegetal carpet in a very narrow space. The glacier globe-flowers, which hold the record of a plant capable to live in the highest altitudes, wait for visitors with their white-pink corolla just nearby the glaciers.

The fauna of Stelvio National Park
The fauna present in the park is one of the most spectacular attraction. In summer, in the pasturages above the tree-growth limit of the forests, visitors can easily observe the chamois, and with a little more luck, also deer, while in the forests it is easy to see roes, which are present in numbers of even some thousand heads. Extremely easy is to watch marmots. Another interesting element of the park are birds. Practically every specie of the alpine fauna is resident in the park at least as a seasonal visitors: from hawks, which is the park's emblem, from spectacular species like the different grouses, etc. to a wide variety of small birds and minor vertebrates (reptiles, amphibians and fishes) which are abundant, same as the extremely rich fauna of invertebrates.
